About

Maria Lopez Valdez

My art practice is a dynamic fusion of installation, video, and traditional painting techniques, incorporating acrylic, gouache, and watercolor paints. By employing a mixed media approach, I seek to explore profound themes such as identity, connection, belonging, and safety.

I start each piece with intuitive sketches, allowing patterns to emerge naturally before either repeating or disrupting them. Using a variety of techniques such as watercolor washes, the vibrant opacity of gouache, and the versatility of acrylics, I layer and blend to create depth and texture. My animation and video art incorporate movement and sound to enhance the sensory experience, while installation art transforms spaces to engage viewers physically and emotionally. Throughout the creation process, I encounter technical and motivational challenges, which I overcome by taking breaks to gain fresh perspectives or conducting research to find innovative solutions. I know a piece is complete when I can accept and embrace its imperfections, recognizing that these flaws contribute to its unique character and authenticity.

Through my art, I aim to evoke emotional responses, fostering empathy and understanding. My personal background as an immigrant deeply informs my work, driving me to explore cultural landscapes and contribute to the broader conversation on identity and belonging.
